Investigators say 29-year-old Matthew Anderson of Elkins was shot Wednesday afternoon as he rammed his car into a car behind him in his effort to get away. Two people in the second car were not seriously injured.

The officer's name hasn't been released and is on paid leave pending an investigation. Police have asked the Washington County Sheriff's Office to conduct the investigation.

Sgt. Bill Phelan says Anderson had pulled into the drive-through and gave the teller a note demanding money. Bank employees then locked themselves and a customer inside the building and called police.
