Hogs Have Two SEC Freshmen of the Year

Alyssa Allison and Solomon Haile, members of Arkansas' women's and men's cross country teams, have been named the 2009 Southeastern Conference Cross Country Freshmen Runners of the Year, it was announced by the league office Tuesday.

Allison, a native of Herculaneum, Mo. and a graduate of Festus High School, was the second freshman finisher overall at the 2009 SEC Cross Country Championships with her 15th-place finish and 6K time of 22:01.69. She was Arkansas' second finisher overall and was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team.

Her best finish of the season came as runner-up at the 5K Missouri Southern Stampede (17:30.59). Her 5K season best of 17:30.59 ranks ninth in the SEC and first among freshman runners and her 6K season best of 21:48.78 ranks 20th in the SEC and second among freshman runners.

Allison has been in Arkansas' scoring five in every meet this season and has not finished outside the top 35 in a race this season. She was twice named the SEC Freshman Runner of the Week (9/22 and 10/20).

Haile, a native of Silver Spring, Md. and a graduate of Sherwood High School, was the top freshman finisher at the 2009 SEC Cross Country Championships with his ninth-place finish and 8K time of 25:01.12. He was Arkansas' third finisher overall, was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team and was named second-team All-SEC.

He picked up a race win in his collegiate debut at the four-mile Arkansas Invitational (19:43.9) and was Arkansas' top finisher at the Wisconsin Invitational with his 17th-place finish and 8K time of 24:25.2. His 8K season best of 24:01.79, clocked at the Missouri Southern Stampede, ranks seventh in the SEC and first among freshman runners.

Haile has been in Arkansas' scoring five in every meet he competed in this season and has not finished outside the top 17 in a race this season. He was twice named the SEC Freshman Runner of the Week (9/22 and 10/6).
