Authorities say 26-year-old Michael Bates surrendered to authorities late Monday night after seeing himself on an evening news show. Bates is accused of pouring scalding water onto the toddler, who suffered severe burns to her back, legs and other parts of her body.

Authorities say the toddler, who was not identified, was taken to Arkansas Children's Hospital on Sunday and has been placed in the custody of the Arkansas Department of Human Services.

The girl's mother, Carine Sykes, faces charges of hindering apprehension or prosecution in connection with the incident. Authorities say Sykes told police several different stories about what happened to her daughter, including that she was accidentally burned in the bathtub.
