Thousands of people in central Arkansas are living in poverty and without health insurance. That's why plans are underway to open Harmony Health Clinic. The free clinic will be located at the corner of Scott and Roosevelt.
Church and youth organizations came out Saturday to show their support for the free clinic in their community.
Pastor Barbara Douglas with First United Methodist Church says, "Anytime someone asks us to come be apart of working in the community as a mission project naturally we have to come. That's what it's all about helping each other."
Volunteer Bruce Biggin takes us on a tour, "This is one of about four examination rooms. The facility will have medical offices, waiting room, play area, a social work office, pharmacy and a dental clinic."
Doctor Sunny Anand is watching his vision take shape.
"How can we allow our brothers and sisters who don't have health insurance to not get the regular care? The routine primary care they need on a daily bases," Doctor Anand says.
The facility is for people between the ages of 13 to 64 living or working in Pulaski County who don't have health insurance or benefits. The services available are for those that make no more than 200 percent of the poverty level, which for a family of four is $41,000.
Doctor Anand adds, "About 18 physicians have signed up, 8 dentists have show and interest in volunteering. This clinic will have pharmacist and a number of medical, dental and pharmacy students."
As for the youth volunteering Saturday they say they'll continue to help when needed.
Volunteer Maya Jackson with Family Garden Church says, "We did a small portions, but I think it helped a lot."
"This is an idea whose time has come," Dr. Anand adds.
With the help of volunteers in this community Harmony Health Clinic has gone from a vision to a reality and it will be opening in October.
The facility will be funded by donations and help from the community. After opening in October doctors will volunteer their services Thursday, Friday and Saturday of each week until there is more demand.
