Little Rock, Ark. (KTHV) - Some residents are getting tired of staring at debris left by this month's tornadoes. One man decided to help with that. He hauled some debris off and made art out of it.
It takes a very creative mind to make a sculpture out of debris, but Jeff Horton has done it. He pulled the debris from his neighborhood of Cammack Village, which still has plenty of it.
It's been nearly two weeks since a tornado tore through the area and piles of debris are still stacked everywhere. Acting Cammack Village Mayor Mary Lynn Walker says things are looking much better.
Walker says, "We do not have a force, or a street department, we have one person for streets. We?re a small little village. We have one person and one pick up, so it would be impossible."
Because Cammack Village is its own city without enough workers to handle this type of debris clean up, the county is handling it. The director of the Pulaski County roads department says it may be four to six weeks before they can clean it all up.
Residents say they understand it'll take awhile, but one is taking matters into his own hands. Artist and architect Jeff Horton, who also lives in Cammack Village, pulled some debris from his friend?s house, helping in the clean up process; but also helping Jeff hone his skills building sculpture.
Horton says, "I'm very conscious of the use of materials and trying to conserve and make as much waste, so when I saw these pieces I though that's great I?ll use these."
Standing on Main Street, just south of Interstate 630 in Little Rock, Jeff has titled one project 'Tornado Chair.' After surviving the storm Jeff says building this was therapeutic.
Horton says, "We took cover and heard the tornado overhead. It was the scariest time I?ve had to experience."
He has no plans to pull additional debris from Cammack Village, but there sure is plenty if he changes his mind.
Pulaski County says it only has about seven men to clean up Cammack Village, so they're asking for everyone's patience.
Another area that was hit hard by the early April tornadoes was the Leawood neighborhood in Little Rock. City crews are working fast on debris clean up there. Some roads that used to have piles of debris are now cleaned up. The city says it's clearing out thirty dump truck loads a day, using more than fifty men. They're even working weekends there.
If you need your debris picked up in Leawood, the city encourages you to call their help line 311. They will schedule a pick up for you.
