Republican Congressman John Boozman of Arkansas is sponsoring legislation that offers tax breaks to volunteer firefighters.
Two House resolutions would amend the Internal Revenue Code. One would allow volunteer firefighters with at least eight years of service to take a $1,500 tax credit and those with three to seven years of service could take a $1,000 tax credit.
The other resolution would allow volunteers who provide firefighting or emergency medical services a tax deduction of up to $250 for their travel expenses. Both bills have been referred to the House Ways and Means Committee.
