University of Arkansas President B. Alan Sugg says he plans to recommend G. David Gearhart as the Fayetteville campus' next chancellor.

Gearhart is the university's vice chancellor for university advancement and an education professor. If selected, he would replace John White, who announced his resignation this month.

Sugg told faculty and staff members of his recommendation Wednesday. Sugg says he will make his recommendation to the University of Arkansas Board of Trustees at its meeting Friday.

Gearhart, 55, has served as a vice chancellor since 1998. He is a native of Fayetteville and an Arkansas graduate.

White's retirement is effective June 30.
