In a look-back on the year for schools in Arkansas, education received some major affirmations. The state Supreme Court said Arkansas was adequately funding its schools and a federal judge released the Little Rock School District from desegregation monitoring.

Amid it all, Little Rock Central High celebrated the 50th anniversary of its integration, and Murphy Oil pledged $50 million over 20 years for college scholarships for every El Dorado High School graduate.

The end of the Lake View school-funding case was judged the fourth-biggest story in Arkansas during the year by Associated Press-member broadcasters and newspaper editors and members of the AP's Arkansas staff. The 50th anniversary of Little Rock Central's integration and turmoil among members of the district's school board was voted the sixth-biggest story in 2007.

The Arkansas Supreme Court ruled in May that the state had met its constitutional standards to provide an adequate school-funding system. The ruling ended a decades long legal battle over the public schools in Arkansas.
