"blew through my skin, basically hit some nerves - mostly in my left leg."

James Harris describes his injuries, injuries he received at the paws of his 9-year-old chocolate lab, Amber.

"I really didn't know what was going on at first," Harris said.

Harris was pheasant hunting with a group and as usual brought Amber along. At one point; he put his shotgun on safety and laid it flat on the ground to climb over a fence to retrieve a bird. On his way back...

"I heard a loud bang...and felt something go past my face. (I)looked down. My dog was standing on my shot gun," Harris said. "She had hit the safety and the trigger and shot me in the leg."

He was rushed to the hospital and then transferred to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Harris has hunted with Amber since she was a pup and says she's a great hunting dog.

"She's more of a flusher; she gets right in the weeds and goes crazy. She really works hard all day long," he said.

Harris says he's received non-stop calls about this dog shoots man incident.

"When I was at the hospital, the DNR stopped by and asked their questions. They said don't be surprised. This isn't the first time this has happened. It's happened quite a few times," Harris said surprised.

Harris doesn't blame Amber. Actually, he just wants to go hunting with her again.

"I'm not much for being cooped up. This is driving me nuts to be stuck here all day long."

Harris will need skin grafts. He hopes those will begin this Friday.
