A Pine Bluff alderman wants to ban the wearing of baggy pants in the city. Under an ordinance proposed by 74-year-old Derwood Smith, the city could fine anyone sporting the look $200, plus court costs. The proposal offered by Smith will come up for discussion at a City Council meeting Tuesday. It says the display of undergarments creates an unnecessary distraction and a spectacle that offends others. It also says that those who wear the style risk personal injury from tripping over their clothes. Smith said he proposed the law because he heard other cities were doing it. Atlanta, along with both Alexandria and Shreveport, Louisiana, are among the places where similar proposals are being considered.
