A sold-out crowd for the American Cancer Society's Legends Gala paid tribute to late Lt. Gov. Win Rockefeller Saturday night at the Peabody Hotel.

In 2006, the American Cancer Society planned to honor Lt. Governor Winthrop P. Rockefeller at the annual Legends Gala, but postponed the event in respect to his family. His death marked the end of a courageous battle against myeloproliferative disease, a rare form of leukemia.

The American Center Society honored Mr. Rockefeller posthumously because they believe his public battle with cancer helped raise awareness.

"When you look at the faces of the cancer patients and you know that an event as wonderful as this is going to go and make a direct impact to help a cancer patient live and be successful with their fight and have a prosperous life, then we've achieved our goal," said Laura Vaughn of the American Cancer Society. The event is expected to net roughly $100,000, which is far past its original financial goal.

The American Cancer Society's Legends Circle is comprised of outstanding leaders with a demonstrated commitment to those touched by cancer. They chosen for contributions in research, education, advocacy, and service.
