The trial continues against the former Lonoke police chief and his wife, Jay and Kelly Campbell. Kelly's alleged lover, who is a prison inmate, took the stand again Wednesday.
Arkansas Department of Corrections inmate Shane Scott was on the stand. He has testified he and Kelly Campbell had a sexual relationship. Wednesday, Scott said that Jay Campbell was OK with that.
On the 11th day of testimony in the scandal trial against them, Jay and Kelly Campbell arrived at the Cabot City Annex building for more testimony. Scott was on the stand all day?a place he's been for several days. (See story link below pictures.)
In redirect questioning, the prosecution asked the witness to clarify all the rules he broke while on a work release program in Lonoke. He listed: access to drugs and alcohol, sexual contact with two women, lying to jailers, escaping and unauthorized phone use.
The prosecution played several taped phone calls between the witness and Kelly Campbell. The calls were made after he was sent back to prison from Lonoke after their alleged two-month affair.
The jury heard Kelly tell Scott on the tapes that Jay Campbell called someone with Arkansas Department of Corrections and told them Scott was his best work release inmate in Lonoke and that he should have no disciplinary action against him for breaking the rules.
Scott also testified that Kelly told him she and Jay were ?swingers? and that the police chief wanted a threesome with them. Scott claimed Kelly also told him, Jay Campbell was fine with her having an affair, as long as he had access to illegal drugs.
The prosecutor says it was a good day for the state.
Lonoke County Prosecuting Attorney Lona McCastlain says, "It was very informative testimony. He has a lot of information. I think we elicited most of that."
Defense attorney Patrick Benca says, "Emotions are high; we've been doing this for two weeks now. I know Miss McCastlain has been through a lot. I?ve been through a lot, so no, it's just part of being in the courtroom for 14 days, 20 days like we have been."
The phone calls also revealed Kelly telling Scott the day he was taken back to prison from Lonoke, she drove to the prison gate and demanded to speak with the warden. When she wasn't allowed, she spent the night in her car near the gate. That's what tipped police off to start this investigation.
The prosecutor thinks Scott will be back on the stand Thursday for more cross-examination.
