It was an extraordinary busy day Wednesday at the trial of the former Lonoke Police Chief Jay Campbell and his wife Kelly. The two, along with bail bondsman, Bobby Cox are accused of running a criminal organization seeking drugs, sex, and money. (See link below pictures for more stories on the trial.)
Wednesday we heard from the man who is accused of having a two-month affair with the police chief's wife. We also heard him talk about the police chief organizing some of their encounters.
Arkansas Department of Corrections inmate Shane Scott, 31, was brought to Cabot to testify against his alleged former lover and her husband. Scott testified Kelly Campbell came on to him, saying she wanted to start a sexual relationship with him.
Scott said, "She wanted to baby me and be my partner and friend for the next three years, until I got out of prison."
Scott went on to testify that they had sex in her Tahoe, in the Lonoke ball park press box, the referee room, the concession stand, in her bedroom, in the chief's office at least 10 times, and in numerous places around the jail He testified one night he sneaked out of jail, Kelly Campbell picked him up and took him to the Holiday Inn in Lonoke where they had arranged for some alone time.
Scott claims she brought a six-pack of beer and illegal drugs like ecstasy, meth, and speed. Scott said they had ?lots of sex.? The inmate went on to testify that he and Kelly Campbell would get high on drugs and he began suspecting Jay Campbell was doing drugs. Scott then testified Jay began arranging meetings between Scott and Kelly.
Also on the stand Wednesday, were a convicted drug dealer. Ryan Childress testified he was set-up one night outside the city limits and arrested for drugs by Jay Campbell.
Defense attorneys say they were able to poke holes in some of the testimony.
Mark Hampton says, "I think today and yesterday were be very good days for the defense believe it or not."
Scott is expected to take the stand again Monday. Trial has recessed until Monday. That's because some of the attorneys had scheduling conflicts for the rest of the week.
