After its sponsor pledged to narrow the scope of a measure overhauling the state's charter-school law, the House has given its approval.
The chamber rejected the measure on Monday, 43-49, but approved it Wednesday after Rep. Keven Anderson said he would change the proposal to keep a cap of 24 schools in place.
Anderson says his proposal, which was rejected Monday by the House, will be amended in the Senate to keep the current limit on charter schools in place. Anderson says the proposal will still remove a requirement that charter schools are distributed equally among the state's four congressional districts. (See link below image for bill.)
The proposal to double the number of charter schools faced opposition from the Arkansas Education Association, which said expanding such schools would take away resources from public schools.
