A driver in Crawford County was killed when a tractor-trailer hauling hogs crashed into a pillar of an overpass, and about 40 of the hogs got loose on the interstate.

State police identified the driver as 34-year-old Armin Brandhorst, of Green, Kan. Troopers speculated that Brandhorst may have fallen asleep, then overcorrected after waking to realize his rig was leaving the roadway.

Law officers needed four hours to round up the loose hogs from Interstate 540 at Mountainburg after the crash at 6:40 a.m. Thursday.

The truck was hauling about 90 hogs to Little Rock. State police say about 20 of the hogs died.

A nearby feed store found a volunteer to keep the hogs until the owner can get them. Traffic was tied up for hours.
