A Hot Springs native was honored Saturday on the Arkansas Walk of Fame. Sergeant Major Alford McMichael is the first sergeant major ever to be appointed to NATO. He is at the highest rank a non-commissioned officer can reach in the Armed Forces and he was honored for all his accomplishments.

The position of sergeant major is called the backbone of the Armed Forces. McMichael is the key link between the men who make the decisions of war and those who actually carry out their orders. It's also a position that's absent from many other Armed Forces in the world and McMichael hopes working this position into NATO will allow more understanding between all nations.

"People will make mistakes along the way. You have to have a big enough heart and an understanding mind to deal with peoples flaws," says McMichael.

McMichael is the 44th person inducted into the Arkansas Walk of Fame.
