Arkansas Congress: 3 rare vacancies draw field to races

 Amanda Terrebonne     4 months ago
Arkansas will have at least three new members of Congress in 2011, a rarity for a state that hasn't experienced this much turnover since the 1970s, except in the post-scandal elections of the 1990s.

Democratic Congressmen Marion Berry and Vic Snyder both decided to retire after 14 years. The state's only Republican member of Congress, John Boozman, is seeking the GOP nomination for Democratic Sen. Blanche Lincoln's seat. Democratic Congressman Mike Ross is the only incumbent House member seeking to stay put.

Arkansas' filing period for political office began Monday. By mid-afternoon Wednesday, 15 people had filed for the three open seats -- including two current legislators and a former House and Senate member.

Arkansas turned over three House seats in 1992, including the post held by Bill Alexander. The former congressman lost to Lincoln after he was caught up in a U.S. House scandal after writing 487 bad checks to the chamber's bank.
