You've heard it said that success is "who you know." While that may have some truth to it, in the workplace it's also how you network.  But women may be at a disadvantage.

Women may soon outnumber men in the workplace. But it's still rare to see them in the corner office. The key, is finding a mentor through networking.

Many professional women don't find out about top level job openings in their own workplace, according to Dr. Lisa Torres, a sociology professor at george washington university who has studied gender networking patterns. "For men, they'd get a tap on the shoulder. Someone would come up to them and say, hey i've heard about this opening in that organization or somewhere else. for women that happened less often. They would find their next job through formal channels".

Torres recommends seeking out contacts in positions above their own, and communicating directly about what they want.

Liz Massey will have more on the importance of networking in her Today's Living report on "Today's THV at 5:00" and todaysthv.com
