Spokesperson Officer Sharen Carter with Conway PD says the man surrendered peacefully without anyone getting hurt.  He is a 26-year-old Iraq war veteran.

He got into an argument with his girlfriend and began threatening his own life.  She got out of the house and called police.  When officers arrived, he barricaded himself in a duplex on Salem Road near Prince Street around 5:30 p.m.  Ofc. Carter says he had a military weapon, an AR15.

"So obviously with that type of weapon, we have to really step up our game," explains Carter.  "And we did evacuate quite a few homes around the surrounding area."

Police shut down a two-block area around the duplex and even evacuated several children from a nearby learning center.

Negotiators talked him out after a couple of hours. The SWAT team was standing by just in case.

No word on whether he'll face charges.
