For Arkansas' homeless living on the street in chilly weather, a simple pair of shoes can make a world of difference. Each year, UAMS staff members coordinate the event to help the homeless population of Central Arkansas, one step at a time.

Arkansas' homeless came in by the droves to River City Ministry in North Little Rock, all hoping to be fitted with a pair of shoes.

Sean O'Bryan says, "I was born with clubbed feet; if you remember Forest Gump the movie, I had a brace like that when I was a kid. I need narrow shoes and I have very little ankle support."

O'Bryan has had a few setbacks in life and says any help is appreciated. His current shoes are worn and without proper support, create hip problems. He adds, "I think it's an excellent opportunity for everybody to come out here and get the medical service they need that you can provide for everyone here."

A nurse yells over the crowd, "Next one to see the doctor, please."

Thursday UAMS staff from the Department of Orthopedics volunteer to help more than 200 needy men and women. Ruth Thomas explains the process, "We start off with a foot bath to soften the skin and allow us to do callus care much easier." She continues, "We're going to examine the feet to make sure we don't have problems like developing ulcers or sores between the toes or an infected, ingrown toenail."

Then patients get measured for the right size shoe provided by Red Wing and two pairs of socks from Snell Prosthetic & Orthotic Laboratory.

Thomas says, "We are really serving people who need the shoes. It really is heart warming."

O'Bryan walks away with a new spring in his step, thanks to these heroes. He adds, "Absolutely, thank you very much, I am very gracious. Thank you very much and God bless you all."

The National organization 'Our Hearts to Your Soles' plans to help more than 8,000 homeless across the U.S. this Thanksgiving season.

UAMS Department of Orthopedics also plan to provide medical screenings.
