Andrea's been teaching 15 years and yet has maintained a grasp on the ever changing landscape of what holds a youngster's attention. Andrea believes that technology can be used to keep students plugged in.
Not to long ago, she applied for a grant from the Arkansas Society of Technology. She won the Make It Happen Award and installed a classroom response system. Each child has a "clicker" that keys in answers to questions that Ms. White is asking.
In the old days kids raised their hand, but that would only tell a teacher what one or two children thought. This new system shows Ms. White where her whole class stands. She doesn't move on until the whole class gets it.
She also began an after school enrichment program. She stays late every night to tutor children and provide organized programs that broaden the students' education until parents come by to pick up their kids at 5:45.
As if that wasn't enough, Ms. White also produces a newscast and televised dramas that run on Valley View's closed circuit TV system.
Should she win, Ms White would receive a $15,000 bonus and be given a year to mentor teachers statewide. Ms. White has already decided that her message will involve technology and how it can hold and teach students.
