Police got the call around 2:30 p.m. about a disturbance on Carlyle Drive off Geyer Springs Rd.
"Officers ordered several times for him to 'Drop the knife, drop the knife' and he did not," says Lt. Terry Hastings.
Two officers shot and killed Nakita Hawkins' son who police say is mentally ill.
"He didn't bother nobody and he be in the house to himself," says Nakita Hawkins.
Hastings says Landris Hawkins lived with his grandmother. She called police after Hawkins allegedly cut her and himself with a knife.
"It was a knife with a six-inch blade on it. It was a kitchen type knife," says Hastings.
When officers arrived, Hastings says Hawkins went after them.
"She [grandmother] was trying to get out and he [Hawkins] would not let her. He had cut her once with a knife. He had a knife in his hand and made threats and that is when the officers fired," says Hastings.
Hastings says neither of the officers had a taser.
"They were standing at the front door of the residence and he was standing inside and they were standing just out," says Hastings. "Do not know how many rounds that were fired."
Adrian Shack is a family friend and he says he's never seen Hawkins violent.
"This is surprising and I never suspected this because he is so quiet," says Shack.
Nakita Hawkins says police should have reacted differently.
"They could have shot him anywhere else. They could have did it in the leg. They didn't have to do that. They didn't have to kill him," says Nakita Hawkins.
Police say Hawkins was arrested in 2001 for drugs.
Hastings says a 13-month-old child and the great grand mother were also home at the time. Police say the grandmother who was cut has only minor injuries.
Hastings says the officers will be on leave for about a week and undergo mandatory counseling.
