The Kidz'n Power child safety camp is an event through the American Taekwondo Association, teaching both parents and children simple ways to minimize the risk of being abducted.
Instructor Michael Moore says beyond telling children to stay away from strangers, teaching them some specific physical moves can also help save their lives.
"Some of the self defense we teach is to hit [attackers] in the nose or knock them in the eyes or do something to stun them to where they get let go," said Moore. "Usually somebody that fights back doesn't get bothered as much as somebody who doesn't."
Moore says another key is to teach children to draw attention to themselves by screaming the word help as loud as they can when they are in danger. It is a lesson Deanna Gamble tries to teach her child who at times can be really quiet.
"I just wanted her to be self prepared and have more confidence than she has now to protect herself," said Gamble.
Hettie Ingram brought her two grandchildren to the event.
"My little girls are very trusting and they are innocent and I just think they need to be aware of what's out there," she said.
The program also teaches gang avoidance and gives parents tools to use at home to continue the safety dialogue.
The American Taekwondo Association is trying to push all their schools to offer these safety workshops. You can call your local branch to see if it's being offered.
