By a more than 2-1 margin, members of Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church in Fort Lauderdale have rejected an effort to remove The Rev. Tullian Tchividjian as pastor.
Today's congregational vote was forced by a petition drive organized by six church members, including the late pastor's daughter, Jennifer Kennedy Cassidy. They called Tchividjian, who took over in March, "a disaster" who has shown "a complete lack of respect."
Under the leadership of Kennedy, who died in 2007, Coral Ridge was a strong conservative voice on issues like homosexuality and abortion. The 37-year-old Tchividjian has brought a less formal style to the church and has rejected politics as the most important way to change the country.
