Wednesday, Edie Poole found 6 pups and their mother malnourished and abandoned. She says it broke her heart to watch the mother trying to feed her babies with an animal that had been run over.
Poole says if the individual who dumped them is caught, she wants it to be a lesson to others that there are penalties and other options.
Holding an abandoned dog, Eddie Poole says, "You're a beautiful girl."
Poole received a call Wednesday morning from the Ward Police Department about two-pups and their mother standing off State Highway 367.
When she arrived and found the two pups in a chest drawer, the mother lead Eddie to 4 more pups.
Poole explains, "One of the little fellows was so tiny, I don't think he would have made it through the day. When I got him out of this little barrel that he was in he was trying to walk and he could only walk on his little knees."
Poole is hopeful someone who recognizes these abandoned and abused dogs comes forward. "From my own pocket I will give a $500 reward if these people that put these animals out can be found. She continues, "If we can find them they will be prosecuted, I will make sure of that."
The penalty, up to a $1,000 fine and a possible year in jail per animal, but if they are never caught nothing will happen.
Poole says, "If people can please be more responsible and find somewhere to spay and neuter and if you can't, don't dump them out."
For now Poole will continue her 16-year crusade to care for abandoned animals and find justice.
"I do help as many people as I can, that's why I work, and most of my paycheck goes to help people. We're going to see if we can pull them all through and then adopt them out," Poole concludes.
The pups are a Dachshund mix and approximately 8-weeks old. They are more than likely from the Lonoke County area.
They all have Sarcoptic Mange a skin disease caused by mites, but it's curable and then they'll be available for adoption.
Poole says abandoned and abused animals in Lonoke County are a serious problem and she gets more than ten calls a day.
