The move comes after three search hounds died of heat exhaustion earlier this month while searching for two escapees from the Pike County jail in Murfreesboro.
Department of Correction spokeswoman Dina Tyler says the dogs are transported in a compartment in the front of a horse trailer. She says the area has windows and officials are considering adding ventilation holes and possibly installing fans.
Tyler says the deaths of the three dogs is the first time that has ever happened. She says the dogs were provided water and electrolytes during the search.
The escapees were recaptured July 9 about 20 miles south of the jail.
