Sixteen Arkansas police agencies are to get about $8.7 million in federal grant money, allowing some agencies to increase patrols. But not departments will be getting checks.

Of the money announced Tuesday, Little Rock is to receive the most, $3 million. Pine Bluff and Jonesboro will each get about $1 million, but Fort Smith isn't on the list. The smallest grant amount is $65,000 to Cotton Plant.

Mayor James Valley of Helena-West Helena said the $197,392 his police department was awarded will pay for two officers, enough to help address juvenile crime and burglaries, which have been a growing problem.

In Little Rock, police spokesman Lt. Terry Hastings says the department will be able to hire 20 officers and get up to full staff for the first time in years.
