Hero Central welcomes over 300 medical professionals who volunteer their time with Harmony Clinic.

Health care in America is at the center of a storm in this country. As Congress looks for a public option, we open Hero Central for a group of medical professionals who are giving of their time.
It's the Harmony Clinic off Main Street on Roosevelt in Little Rock. There are 100 medical professionals, 19 of them doctors, who volunteer there twice a week. It gives people in need a place to go for basic medical attention. Since it opened in December of 2008, over 100 patients have come through its doors. None of them are charged.
There's a dental office included. It too offers the basics, but Dr. Harvey Matheny, a local endodontist, is hopeful they'll one day be able to expand. Not that the current services are all that shabby. They can now do digital x-rays that can be shared with medical offices worldwide.
The clinic needs more volunteers, and cash as it looks to expand. Until there are other solutions in the public sector, Harmony and the two dozen free clinics statewide, will depend on the big hearts of the medical community. Fortunately for Little Rock, those hearts are in abundance.
August 28, a golf tournament is being held at the Country Club of Arkansas in Maumelle. For more information visit: harmonyclinicar.org.
