Arkansas State Police say that three people are dead after a series of collisions on Interstate 40 early Saturday morning near Brinkley.

State Police spokesman Bill Sadler says the first crash happened just after 3 a.m. Sadler says an 18-wheeler driven by Zhi H. Cai, 45, of Arcadia, Calif., slowed down due to a construction zone. Sadler says Albert Barnes, 52, of Brinkley, drove his car into the back of 18-wheeler and died in the crash. As troopers worked to clear the roadway, another crash happened just before 5 a.m. Sadler says an 18-wheeler crashed into the back of a pickup truck, which burst into flames. Sadler says two people died in the fire, though troopers don't know the victims' names or sex. Another two people were injured. Another crash occurred later, but there were no injuries. Sadler says westbound traffic on I-40 slowly began to move after 1 p.m. Sadler says troopers would have to stop traffic occasionally to allow wreckers to remove the damaged vehicles. He expects traffic to be moving freely just after 6 p.m. this evening.
