A news release Thursday from Sens. Blanche Lincoln and Mark Pryor and Rep. Mike Ross, all D-Ark., said the funds are being provided through two programs of the USDA's National Institute of Food and Agriculture. The programs support to historically black colleges and universities that were designated as land-grant universities.

UAPB was founded as a land-grant school under the name of Arkansas AM&N College -- the letters stood for agricultural, mechanical and normal, or teacher-training.

UAPB will receive $972,294 through the 1890 Facilities Grants Program, which provides funds for acquiring and improving food sciences facilities and equipment, including libraries. The university will also receive $1,404,751 to support five projects under the 1890 Institution Research, Extension, and Teaching Capacity Building Grants Program, intended to increase and strengthen food and agriculture sciences through the integration of education, research and outreach to local communities.
