Derek rocketed to worldwide fame in 1979 in "10," starring as the perfect fantasy woman in Blake Edwards' film comedy starring the late Dudley Moore. The film's iconic scene was of Derek, her hair in then-unusual beaded cornrows, running in slow motion on the beach.
The parade begins at 6 p.m. March 17 in the Spencer's Corner area of downtown Hot Springs. The official parade route covers the 98-foot length of Bridge Street, declared by Ripley's Believe It or Not as the world's shortest street in everyday use.
The parade will continue the tradition of also featuring a celebrity-look-alike. This year Ronnie Rodriguez, a dead ringer for Johnny Depp, will appear as the pirate character Captain Jack Sparrow from the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies.
The movie "10" that made Derek famous will be screened at the Malco Theater by the Hot Springs Documentary Film Institute.
"We will show '10' at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 16, at the Malco," said Malinda Herr-Chambliss, executive director of the Institute. "There will be a suggested donation of $5."
The World's Shortest St. Patrick's Day Parade has gained worldwide fame since its inception and was declared by Smithsonian Magazine last year as "The Quirkiest St. Patrick's Day Parade on Earth."
