As you know, childhood obesity is a serious problem across Arkansas and our state is doing a good job of trying to help overweight children - or those at risk of becoming overweight - manage their health to avoid serious health issues.

In an effort to help children who are battling weight issues, Arkansas Children's Hospital has formed the WHAM program, a FREE activity and education opportunity that takes place every 7 weeks. It stands for Wellness, Health, Action and Motivation.

This program combines physical activity, nutrition education and motivation to teach children how to develop a healthier life style. The next WHAM class is Saturday, February 27.

It is open to children age 6 to 18 and they must have a referral from their doctor to attend the WHAM class. The WHAM class will begin with an 8:45 a.m. registration and will run until 2pm. They will take part in a physical activity on the ACH campus and be coached on nutrition education.

As a follow-up to the WHAM class, participants have the opportunity every week to take part in a physical activity workout every Monday at UALR that includes one-on-one exercise training with a trainer at the university.

There is also a free exercise class held every Saturday at Arkansas Children's Hospital Fitness Center from 10-12. Participants are offered 15 minute bi-monthly follow-up sessions with our dietitians to continue learning more about maintaining the right eating habits and food choices.

If you cannot attend the WHAM class on February 27th, here are additional dates this year -- April 1, May 22, July 17, September 18, and November 6. For more information, please call 364-4000, ext. option #5 (501) 364-1264.
