Baby skin protection: Ways to keep baby's skin hydrated

 Carol Phillips     6 months ago
The cold dry winter weather leads to dry skin on adults, so you can imagine what it does to a baby's skin. In this week's Healthy Child report, Dr. Bryan Burke visits with a dermotologist for some expert advice on keeping baby's skin hydrated.

Angela Cole recently brought her son in to have bumps on his arms and legs looked at.

"He was still a baby and I noticed red splotches on the bends on the back of his legs and his arms so I got kind of concerned," she says. Turns out, Dailen had what's called Baby Eczema. "They gave me a prescription with Vaseline and steroids and just told me to keep that on there."

Dermatologist, Dr. Lindsay Enns, says winter weather and temperatures can really hurt that baby soft skin.

"During the winter there is so much less humidity in the air and babies are very sensitive to drying out especially those with eczema, so it's very important to keep their skin well hydrated," says Enns.

Enns says Eczema is one of many skin conditions she treats during the winter. "We definitely see baby dandruff which is called dermatitis, we also see acne in babies."

She says that's why it's important to keep their young skin protected. "You give them a bath every night, and then you just leave their skin wet after you take them out of the bath and coat them with Vaseline. Often times that will keep them well hydrated throughout the winter better than anything."

And make sure your baby's soap and moisturizer is perfume free. There's nothing quite like baby skin: the sweet smell and soft feel. You can help your baby's skin stay that way by being vigilant, by using the right moisturizers and by visiting your doctor whenever your baby is suffering from dry skin or eczema.
