Eight nonprofit organizations are seeking approval to open new charter schools in Arkansas in the 2010-2011 school year.

Two of the proposed charter schools would fall within the boundaries of the Little Rock School District, which is already the location of eight open-enrollment charter schools.

The other six applications are for schools in Springdale, Fayetteville, West Memphis, Blytheville, McNeil in Columbia County and Gillett in Arkansas County.

The Arkansas Board of Education must review and act on each proposal, a process that will likely begin in November. Eighteen open-enrollment charter schools now operate statewide. The Education Board by law can authorize a total of 24, leaving just six slots currently open.
