TASMANIA, Australia (CBS) -- A hundred and forty five water-skiers in Australia's Tasmania attempted to break the world record for the number of skiers pulled behind one boat on Friday.
The participants remained on their skis for a full nautical mile (1.85 km) inside Macquarie Harbour at Strahan. "I'm from England and Maggie's from England I'm originally from Tasmania so to come back here and do something like this is really special," said an unidentified participant.
Members from the same team set the previous record of 114 in the same place. In all, 154 skiers from all over the world started the event, but nine fell.
The 35m (114 feet) catamaran, which normally takes tourists on tours of the area, was specially modified with different propellers and a 94m-wide (308 feet) aluminum boom which stopped each skier's rope from becoming tangled.
The organizers said 8km (5 miles) of ski rope was used for the new record. The Guinness Book of Records is expected to recognize the new record within the next few months.
