UNITED KINGDOM (CNN) -- A British drama that didn't make an appearance on the SAG Awards' winners list but it's certainly a success story. It will start its third season in September much to the joy of fans around the world.
Highclere Castle is the title character and setting of "Downton Abbey", a period drama about an aristocratic British family and their servants on the eve of World War I. The show has won several awards and millions of fans around the world.
What makes it so popular? CNN asked fans at a viewing party in Brooklyn, who dress in period clothing and eat traditional Edwardian dishes at their weekly Downton Abbey dinners. Sarah O'Holla says, "Obviously I love the clothes. I love the house and the furniture. But, it's a good drama. I like TV drama." Tammy Dunn says, "I'm really into English history, so it was sort of a natural outflow of that" O'Holla adds, "The Countess is my favorite because of her one-liners mainly."
Patrons at a Manhattan bookstore told us why they like "Downtown Abbey". Thomas F. Knapp says, "I'm a sucker for a good.. anything with an English accent, with upstairs, downstairs theme." Raphael Sullivan says, "I enjoy watching the show because it's really like getting a glimpse into a world that doesn't exist anymore."
Finally, we asked some of the cast members to explain Downton's popularity. Amy Nuttall, who plays Ethel, says, "Escapism, everyone loves escapism and being drawn into this beautiful world with this beautiful big house and the upstairs and the downstairs, it's just so interesting to see how it was."
Elizabeth McGovern , who plays Cora, Countess of Grantham says, "I think it's nice for everyone to go into a world that's peaceful and yet it has a lot of drama and intrigue. But, it's not got the nastiness of a lot of contemporary shows."
Hugh Bonneville who plays Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham says, " A lot of people love costume dramas, period dramas. But, this is one where no one knows the ending. It's not like the adaptation of a Jane Austen, where you know what's going to happen in the end."
We may not know what will happen in the end, but we know that millions will stay tuned to Downton Abbey to find out.
