LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) - The West Memphis 3 story has captured the attention of Arkansas and the entire country for decades.

Now a new documentary, featured at last week's Sundance Film Festival, tells the story behind an extraordinary and desperate fight to bring the truth to light.

Told and made by those who lived it, the filmmakers of West of Memphis were given unprecedented access to the inner workings of the defense.

The film shows the investigation, research and appeals process in a way that has never been seen before.

Former death row inmate Damien Echols and his wife Lorri Davis were involved in the making of the documentary. Oscar-nominated filmmaker Amy Berg directed and famed director Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings) produced.

THV's Melissa Dunbar-Gates spoke to Patrick Benca, attorney for Echols, on 'Today's THV This Morning Saturday' about the disturbing case that still haunts the American South. Click on the video link!

West of Memphis is slated to hit selected theatres in September.
