LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (KTHV) -- Every year, Reverend Benny Johnson tries to make sure families in need have at least one gift to give their kids -- a bike. He's been surprising kids for the past six years.
Today, on "THV This Morning," Johnson was calling for bikes and volunteers to help make Christmas one to remember for some special kids.
As of this morning, only 11 bikes had been donated. Meaning they were dozens short with Christmas just days away.
Johnson called this afternoon to tell us about a surprise that was sent his way after being on our morning show.
"A young man saw us on the news and came all the way from Newport, Arkansas and purchased 24 bikes. He didn't want to be identified but I thank God for him, I pray God's richest blessings on him, and while we were standing in line, a lady came up and bought two more bikes," said Johnson.
They are still 31 bikes short of their goal, and Johnson is looking for volunteers with trucks to deliver bikes leading up to and on Christmas day.
"You give a kid a bike and you see the expression on their face, it's enough to last a lifetime," says Rev. Johnson.
New and used bikes are being accepted for children ages four to eleven years old. They also need training wheels for both girls and boys.
"We are challenging all the churches from Little Rock, attorneys, businessmen, owners and concerned citizens to please donate a bike," says Rev. Johnson.
The program is named the Vickie Coby Memorial Bike Giveaway, in honor of Rev. Johson's late fiancee.
You can drop off bikes at Master Richard Anderson's Taekwondo Studio (5909 South University) or call 541-1951 or 375-5507 for more information.
The bikes will be delivered on Christmas Day to those children who might not have a present otherwise.
