LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Organizations, businesses, and churches of many denominations have joined farmers and hunters to transform an abundant white-tailed deer population into a renewable food source for the hungry.
Arkansas Hunters Feeding the Hungry (AHFH) is a highly successful program that has provided approximately 1.5 million meals to the state's most needy citizens.
The program has been in place in Arkansas since 2000. Hunters can donate venison and other wild game. There are about 60 meat processors statewide who accept and process the meat for the program.
Workers, cut it, grind it and then load it up on trucks. It is then off to food pantries across the Natural State, for those that need it most.
The success of the program depends upon the generosity of hunters to donate venison and other wild game, cooperation from meat processors throughout the state, support from local food distribution organizations, and the financial contributions of businesses and other citizens.
The organization needs to raise about $100,000 to fund the program annually.
