LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Helping create a mathematics tutoring
program and connecting to students has added up for Arkansas' 2011 Rural Teacher of Year.

Hampton High School mathematics teacher Mindy Brinkman was given the honor, which is presented annually by the Arkansas Rural Education Association and sponsored by the Electric Cooperatives of Arkansas.

Brinkman was instrumental in the creation of a pre-school day
mathematics tutoring program at Hampton High. She and other
mathematics instructors meet with students to provide tutoring when needed.

Hampton High School Principal Glenn Johnston says Brinkman has
the "teacher's touch" for connecting with her students.

The Rural Teacher of the Year Award winner is selected based on
the quality and depth of answers to questions in eight categories, including philosophy of teaching and professional biography.
