Thursday Morning Dogs

Thursdays morning, happy endings begin. It's a day for dogs that were abandoned and forgotten, to begin a new journey.

Thursday mornings in the Petsmart parking lot in Little Rock, something magical happens.

Dog rescuers from all over Arkansas and the Southwest, converge. They come to bring their rescued dogs to a truck owned by Kyle Peterson from Tennessee. Once a week, Kyle brings his air conditioned, climate controlled truck to Little Rock, the dogs are loaded up and taken to the Northeast. Dogs abandoned in Arkansas, are nursed back to health and wind up in homes in New York, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and beyond.

As Gina Hartsell, who founded a lab rescue organization, points out, in the northeast they have strict spay and neutering laws, and dogs aren't nearly as prevalent. There are more dogs to adopt in the south.

It was Hartsell who first found Peterson's Pet Transport six years ago. Other dog rescuers began to join Gina on Thursdays, and now it's a weekly tradition. It's the starting point for happy endings.

Last year in Little Rock, 5,700 animals were put to sleep. This is a far better story. It's good to be a Thursday dog.
